Shouting Out

topic posted Mon, January 9, 2006 - 6:06 PM by  Kat
I am brand spankin' new to Florida. Well, except for that part where I spent the first 11 years of my life here, but trust me, it was a different world back then. Today I'm in a different city (burg, small town, hole-in-the-wall), and drowning in bingo games and scrapbooking sessions. I've seen Stephen King novels with less death waiting to happen.

Is there life out there?
For that matter, is there YOUTH out there?

Please, please, please tell me there is, before I lose my mind!!

(Also, hints on job-hunting wouldnt hurt, either.)

Lorida. Near Ft Bassinger, if you need o find it on a map. I have okachobee and Seabring to pick from, and both offer a LOT of minimum wage jobs. My pocketbook is in shock.

hi, Kat...We live in NorthCentral Florida (Ocala, near Gainesville), and life can be rough here. I went to High School here, so i have a band of friends, but it's always been a shock coming back here from others places in the country. Also, i know (atleast here where i am) Florida has some of the crappiest pay anywhere! Guess this probably doesn't help, but i just wanted you to know you aren't alone out there!

Like we say... "Florida: Manhatten rent with Phillipines wages." It used to be much better before housing costs went nuts from so many folks retiring from Up North and moving down here, driving home costs up several hundred percent. Since it looks like we're going to get the cr*p kicked out of us by hurricanes for the next 10-15 years that might help reduce the demand for bulldozing local restaurants and building more condos.

I keep hoping. I love what Florida was years and years ago, and it seems the old folk crowd is killing it, as well as investors with more eye on their pocketbook than on the natural balance of the state. I keep hoping the increased fury of the hurricanes will make golden years in antoher part of the country seem more productive, but so far no dice.

I don't see it happening anytime too soon. I live in Ocala, which over the last ten years has positively exploded with growth and development. It's crazy, and the cost of living is skyrocketing. We have people from the larger Metro areas flooding here, because home costs are still a little lower here than there, and the city was certainly not built w/ this sort of growth in mind. Also, the pay scale has MOST CERTAINLY not risen accordingly here. I recommend escaping while you can, although this is coming from a devout Anti-Florida gal (who just happens to be unlucky enough to have most of her family here). RUN!!!

Can't. :) One of the reasons I am down here is because a beloved old folk of my own family has cancer. In her defense, however, she grew old with Florida, and has been here since she was a child. She isnt living here because of slick advertising campaigns.

But I'm only staying long enough to see her get better and get my own finances in order, then I'm vanished.

Yep....no more camping on the beach, cooking fresh fish and telling tales. If the cops don't get you now the punks will. I sure miss the OLD Fla.

Actually there are places to camp on the beach; some official and some not. On the Atlantic coast, there are several state parks between Nassau county and St. Augustine. On the Gulf coast, there are lots of options.

I agree and as a new member, let me add my two cents. Grew up in St. Pete when gigantic gopher turtles roamed the Earth. Driving 15 min North was like going to Dade city now. We used to go out to Lake Seminole at night to hear the Panther howl. One day the developers torched a thousand acres of our beloved playground Eagles nests and all. My friends and I became one of the first cells of eco-terrorists. Lucky I never got caught. Wandered FL from Pine Island to Key West while there was still a whiff of Jimmy Buffet in the air. Stayed for a year to get to know the Conch's. Police ran me out of town for living out of a step-van. On my way home I camped out on Naples beach and collected a thousand sharks teeth and learned how to make jewelery out of them. Currently a refuge in Alachua, which seems to be heading on the same path as St. Pete. Oh where will I lay my weary head when there is nothing nothing concrete smothering Mother Earth? God help us all.

I feel we should move and leave it to the invaders . A real shame as I expect it to look like the Jersey shore...... 10 ft . between houses , and sewage washing up on shore ! You would not believe what you find on the Jersey beaches if you see them before they "sweep" them with a tractor !

Ah, but where do you go? Omaha??? No offense to any Nebraskans reading this, but my sailboat would look a bit out of place in Nebraska, and the surfing sucks there.

My favorite bumper sticker reads, "Leaving Florida? Take a friend!".

My second favorite one is "We don't give a flying fuck how you did it up north" Oh wait. That one is just in my imagination.
